Assignment - Talking about Project One
For the first Project of this class I was tasked with expanding my knowledge of something that interested me. I know, pretty vague, but from that vague assignment I got to do something really fun: talk about video games. Up until this project I never really had the opportunity to talk about video games in a classroom setting despite the fact that I love them so much and spend a majority of my time playing them. In a previous class this year I was able to talk about the story but never the game design aspect like I did in Project One. However in that paper I talked about a completely different game franchise than the one I picked in Project One. In that paper, and in Project 2 as well, I talked about the Dark Souls franchise, but in Project One I talked about a game franchise that is near and dear to my heart: The Legend of Zelda.
My main idea for Project One was to talk about the latest game in the series, Breath of the Wild, and talk about how drastically different in design it was to previous games. I would be comparing it to the older game sin the franchise of which it takes inspirations from: The Legend of Zelda (Zelda 1) and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (LttP) In preparation for the project I play both games and to be honest this was some of the most fun. I ended up really enjoying both games a lot and even consider going and playing Zelda 1 again on a daily basis. After playing the games I went and binged a series of videos on Zelda Dungeon design and other videos by Mark Brown. Mark is an amazing youtube creator who talks about game design in his videos. He does an amazing job and as such he is where my research comes from, typically to support the points and conclusions I come to. After all that was done it was time to write the paper, which was just as enjoyable as the other parts oddly enough.
You can read Project One in its entirety right now on the Project One Page.
After this project I gained a lot of respect for not only the older Zelda games but for Breath of the Wild as well. In the early drafts I was very critical and negative when talking about it but as I did more research and played the games more I got a much better understanding of where Breath of the Wild was coming from. As I said at the end of the paper, Breath of the Wild is in no way my favorite Zelda game (*cough* Wind Waker *cough*) but I appreciate the game for what it is now rather than what it isn't.
